|Statistical Constraints for Astrometric Binaries with Nonlinear Motion|
Useful constraints on the orbits and mass ratios of astrometric binariesin the Hipparcos catalog are derived from the measured proper motiondifferences of Hipparcos and Tycho-2 (Δμ), accelerations ofproper motions (μ˙), and second derivatives of proper motions(μ̈). It is shown how, in some cases, statistical bounds can beestimated for the masses of the secondary components. Two catalogs ofastrometric binaries are generated, one of binaries with significantproper motion differences and the other of binaries with significantaccelerations of their proper motions. Mathematical relations betweenthe astrometric observables Δμ, μ˙, and μ̈ andthe orbital elements are derived in the appendices. We find a remarkabledifference between the distribution of spectral types of stars withlarge accelerations but small proper motion differences and that ofstars with large proper motion differences but insignificantaccelerations. The spectral type distribution for the former sample ofbinaries is the same as the general distribution of all stars in theHipparcos catalog, whereas the latter sample is clearly dominated bysolar-type stars, with an obvious dearth of blue stars. We point outthat the latter set includes mostly binaries with long periods (longerthan about 6 yr).

The Catalogue, available at the Centre de Données Stellaires deStrasbourg, consists of 13 573 records concerning the results obtainedfrom different methods for 7778 stars, reported in the literature. Thefollowing data are listed for each star: identifications, apparentmagnitude, spectral type, apparent diameter in arcsec, absolute radiusin solar units, method of determination, reference, remarks. Commentsand statistics obtained from CADARS are given. |Catalogs of temperatures and [Fe/H] averages for evolved G and K stars|
A catalog of mean values of [Fe/H] for evolved G and K stars isdescribed. The zero point for the catalog entries has been establishedby using differential analyses. Literature sources for those entries areincluded in the catalog. The mean values are given with rms errors andnumbers of degrees of freedom, and a simple example of the use of thesestatistical data is given. For a number of the stars with entries in thecatalog, temperatures have been determined. A separate catalogcontaining those data is briefly described. |Temperatures for A0-K0 Supergiants from 13-Color Photometry|
Observations on the 13-color photometric system are reported for 71A0-K0 supergiant stars brighter than V=6.0. Three independent methods todetermine the effective temperatures for A0-K0 supergiants from their13C photometry are discussed: 1) Calibrations between T$eff$and reddening-free indices are developed; temperatures were collectedfrom the literature for the calibration stars, and most of them werespectroscopically determined. 2) An empirical correlation betweenintrinsic colors in the 13C system and T$eff$ has beenderived. 3) The unreddened colors are compared with synthetic colorscalculated by Kurucz (1989); this leads to simultaneous estimates forT$eff$ and log $g$. The estimated uncertainties inT$eff$ by the three methods are comparable and areapproximately plus or minus 200-300K. (SECTION: Stars)
|A catalogue of [Fe/H] determinations: 1996 edition|
A fifth Edition of the Catalogue of [Fe/H] determinations is presentedherewith. It contains 5946 determinations for 3247 stars, including 751stars in 84 associations, clusters or galaxies. The literature iscomplete up to December 1995. The 700 bibliographical referencescorrespond to [Fe/H] determinations obtained from high resolutionspectroscopic observations and detailed analyses, most of them carriedout with the help of model-atmospheres. We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star,when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.
|Metal enrichment in elliptical galaxies and globular clusters through the study of iron and H-Beta spectral indices|
Chemical evolution of elliptical galaxies and globular clusters isaddressed through a combined study of the iron indices at 5270 and 5335A, and of the H-Beta line strength. The observational database of 74standard stars (both dwarfs and giants) referred to in a previous paper(Buzzoni et al. (1992)) complemented with the data of Faber et al.(1985) and Gorgas et al. (1993) allowed us to explore here Fe and H-Betaindex dependence on stellar temperature, gravity, and metallicity. Thederived fitting functions were then included into Buzzoni's (1989) codefor population synthesis in order to derive expected integrated indicesfor simple stellar populations and compare with observations. Partitionof metals in the current chemical mix of galaxies and globulars has beenconstrained supporting the claim that light alpha elements might beenhanced in the globular cluster metal-poor population. An alternativeconclusion resting on the standard framework with (alpha/Fe) = 0 wouldrequire a systematically larger age, about 18-20 Gyr. Iron and magnesiumin ellipticals are found in average solar but a systematic trend of(Mg/Fe) vs global metallicity does exist with iron more deficient withrespect to magnesium at high Z. We conclude that this effect mightindicate that Fe abundance per unit mass in the galaxies is constant(suggesting a constant rate per unit mass of SN I events) while lightmetals supplied by SNe II should have been more effectively enrichedwith increasing galactic total mass.
|The magnesium Mg2 index as an indicator of metallicity in elliptical galaxies|
A quantitative calibration of the Mg2 index is attempted deriving ametallicity scale for elliptical galaxies. The dependence of the indexon stellar temperature, gravity, and metallicity has been studiedthrough spectroscopic observations of 87 standards applying the derivedcalibration to models for stellar population synthesis. Buzzoni's (1989)computational code has been used to explore the behavior of the indexversus age, IMF, and metallicity of simple stellar populations,inferring galactic metallicity for the Davies et al. (1987) extensiveobservational database. It appears that ellipticals are old metal-richsystems, with age about 15 Gyr and (Fe/H) = + 0.15. A large spread ofnearly one order of magnitude is, however, derived for metallicity amongsingle galaxies confirming that (Fe/H) is the driving parameter inducingthe color spread in the galaxy population. Evolutionary behavior of Mg2is briefly discussed giving its expected variations at early epochs forcomparison with high-redshift galaxies.
|A catalogue of Fe/H determinations - 1991 edition|
A revised version of the catalog of Fe/H determinations published by G.Cayrel et al. (1985) is presented. The catalog contains 3252 Fe/Hdeterminations for 1676 stars. The literature is complete up to December1990. The catalog includes only Fe/H determinations obtained from highresolution spectroscopic observations based on detailed spectroscopicanalyses, most of them carried out with model atmospheres. The catalogcontains a good number of Fe/H determinations for stars from open andglobular clusters and for some supergiants in the Magellanic Clouds.
|A critical appraisal of published values of (Fe/H) for K II-IV stars|
'Primary' (Fe/H) averages are presented for 373 evolved K stars ofluminosity classes II-IV and (Fe/H) values beween -0.9 and +0.21 dex.The data define a 'consensus' zero point with a precision of + or -0.018 dex and have rms errors per datum which are typically 0.08-0.16dex. The primary data base makes recalibration possible for the large(Fe/H) catalogs of Hansen and Kjaergaard (1971) and Brown et al. (1989).A set of (Fe/H) standard stars and a new DDO calibration are given whichhave rms of 0.07 dex or less for the standard star data. For normal Kgiants, CN-based values of (Fe/H) turn out to be more precise than manyhigh-dispersion results. Some zero-point errors in the latter are alsofound and new examples of continuum-placement problems appear. Thushigh-dispersion results are not invariably superior to photometricmetallicities. A review of high-dispersion and related work onsupermetallicity in K III-IV star is also given.
|CA II H and K measurements made at Mount Wilson Observatory, 1966-1983|
Summaries are presented of the photoelectric measurements of stellar CaII H and K line intensity made at Mount Wilson Observatory during theyears 1966-1983. These results are derived from 65,263 individualobservations of 1296 stars. For each star, for each observing season,the maximum, minimum, mean, and variation of the instrumental H and Kindex 'S' are given, as well as a measurement of the accuracy ofobservation. A total of 3110 seasonal summaries are reported. Factorswhich affect the ability to detect stellar activity variations andaccurately measure their amplitudes, such as the accuracy of the H and Kmeasurements and scattered light contamination, are discussed. Relationsare given which facilitate intercomparison of 'S' values with residualintensities derived from ordinary spectrophotometry, and for convertingmeasurements to absolute fluxes.
|IUE and Einstein survey of late-type giant and supergiant stars and the dividing line|
Results are presented on an IUE UV survey of 255 late-type G, K, and Mstars, complementing the Maggio et al. (1990) Einstein X-ray survey of380 late-type stars. The large data sample of X-ray and UV detectionsmake it possible to examine the activity relationship between the X-rayand the UV emissions. The results confirm previous finding of a trendinvolving a steeply-dropping upper envelope of the transition regionline fluxes, f(line)/f(V), as the dividing line is approached. Thissuggests that a sharp decrease in maximum activity accompanies theadvancing spectral type, with the dividing line corresponding to thissteep gradient region. The results confirm the rotation-activityconnection for stars in this region of the H-R diagram.
|Large and kinematically unbiased samples of G- and K-type stars. II - Observations of evolved stars in the Bright Star sample. III - Evolved young disk stars in the Bright Star sample|
Four color and RI observations were obtained for a large sample ofG-type and K-type stars in the Bright Star Catalogue. Data are firstpresented for 110 evolved stars. Photometry of evolved young diskpopulation stars have then been calibrated for luminosity, reddening,and metallicity on the basis of results for members of the Hyades andSirius superclusters. New DDO results are given for 120 stars.
|The Perkins catalog of revised MK types for the cooler stars|
A catalog is presented listing the spectral types of the G, K, M, and Sstars that have been classified at the Perkins Observatory in therevised MK system. Extensive comparisons have been made to ensureconsistency between the MK spectral types of stars in the Northern andSouthern Hemispheres. Different classification spectrograms have beengradually improved in spite of some inherent limitations. In thecatalog, the full subclasses used are the following: G0, G5, G8, K0, K1,K2, K3, K4, K5, M0, M1, M2, M3, M4, M5, M6, M7, and M8. Theirregularities are the price paid for keeping the general scheme of theoriginal Henry Draper classification.
|A comparative study of NA I and CA II infrared lines in stars, star clusters and galaxy nuclei - an alternative to the dwarf-enriched population|
A comparative study is made of the near-infrared Na I doublet and the CaII triplet, among sets of stars, star clusters and galaxy nuclei. Inparticular, the semistellar nucleus of M31 is studied. Evidence is foundthat the enhancement of the absorption feature around 8200 A in galaxynuclei is not due to a strengthening of the Na I lines, but rather toanother absorber, possibly a molecular band at about 8205 A which variesstrongly with Theta(eff) and metallicity. Therefore, an alternativeexplanation to the classical discussion about dwarf/giant star contentin M31, is that of an increased metallicity in the semistellar nucleusof M31, with respect to its bulge or to the nucleus of M32. A similarresult is found from molecular bands in the visible part of thespectrum, like CN and C2 which show highly nonlinear dependences on themetallicity.
|E. W. Fick Observatory stellar radial velocity measurements. I - 1976-1984|
Stellar radial velocity observations made with the large vacuumhigh-dispersion photoelectric radial velocity spectrometer at FickObservatory are reported. This includes nearly 2000 late-type starsobserved during 585 nights. Gradual modifications to this instrumentover its first eight years of operation have reduced the observationalerror for high-quality dip observations to + or - 0.8 km/s.

|A catalogue of Fe/H determinations, 1984 edition|
The present version of the Cayrel de Strobel et al. (1981) catalog ofFe/H abundance ratio determinations contains 1921 values for 1035 stars,which represents an augmentation over the previous publication of 48 and47 percent, respectively. In addition, the literature search conductedis complete up to December, 1983. Stellar metal abundance, effectivetemperature, spectroscopic gravity, spectral type, and photometricindices are covered.
|Lithium in the barium stars|
New high-resolution spectra of the lithium resonance doublet haveprovided lithium abundances or upper limits for 26 classical and mildbarium stars. The lithium lines always are present in the classicalbarium stars. Lithium abundances in these stars obey a trend withstellar masses consistent with that previously derived for ordinary Kgiants. This supports the notion that classical barium stars arepost-core-He-flash or core-He-burning stars. Lithium contents in themild barium stars, however, often are much smaller than those of theclassical barium stars; sometimes only upper limits may be determined.The cause for this difference is not easily understood, but may berelated to more extensive mass loss by the mild barium stars.
|The infrared CA II triplet - A luminosity indicator for stellar population synthesis|
A Reticon detector coupled to a spectrograph was used to scan the Ca IIIR triplet of 62 stars during Nov. 15-19, 1980. The stars scannedspanned the spectral types B to mid-M and four orders of magnitude ingravity and one in metallicity. Strong correlations were found betweenthe Ca II luminosity and log g, strong enough so that g could bedetermined from the Ca magnitude alone. Metal rich stars also generallyexhibited enhanced Ca II emission. Ca II was the strongest feature inthe near-IR region. The Ca II line is concluded a valid indicator ofgiant stars and thus reliable for constraining the dwarf/giant ratio ina stellar population. The conclusion is in accord with the data base onthe population and luminosity of M31.
|The problem of the barium stars|
Ultraviolet observations of barium stars and other cool stars withpeculiar element abundances are reported. Those observations attemptedto find hot white dwarf companions. Among six real barium stars studied,only Zeta Cap was found to have a white dwarf companion. Among sevenmild, or marginal, barium stars studied, at least three were found tohave hot subluminous companions. It is likely that all of them havewhite dwarf companions.
|New UBVRI photometry for 900 supergiants|
A description is presented of the results obtained in connection with asystematic program of supergiant photometry on the Johnson UBVRI system.During the eight years after the start of the program, almost 1000 starshave been observed, about 400 three or more times each. The originalselection of stars used the spectral type catalog of Jaschek et al.(1964) to choose supergiants. Since observations were possible from bothChile and Canada, no declination limits were imposed, and no particularselection criteria were imposed other than to eliminate carbon stars.These are so red as to require enormous extrapolations of thetransformation equations.
|The reddening, metal abundance, and luminosity of high-luminosity G-type stars|
The abundance parameters of the sample of 100 G-type bright giants andsupergiants whose photometry is presently discussed indicate Fe/H valuesof between about + 0.6 dex and the solar value, using a preliminarycalibration of the photometric indices. The few long period Cepheidsthat are not heavily blanketed F-type stars give reddening values thatare in agreement with current results from other methods of analysis.Supergiants show no clear gradients in the galactic distribution ofabundances, and those nearest the sun range from an Fe/H of about + 0.3dex, for members of the Pleiades Group, to near solar abundance. A smallsample of Large Magellanic Cloud supergiants shows nearly the same rangein metal abundance as the galactic stars, and gives a modulus for thisCloud of 18.3 + or - 0.20 mag.

|Magnetic structure in cool stars. VI - CA II H and K fluxes from evolved stars|
Quantitative measurements of the Ca II H and K flux of 335 evolved starsare presented and discussed. The results show that there is a largespread in the fluxes from stars with (B-V) less than 0.95 while the CaII H and K flux of single stars with (B-V) greater than 0.95 correlateswith color with little spread. Short-period binaries show a relativelyhigh Ca II H and K flux indicating that high fluxes result from rapidrotation independent of spectral type. The data are consistent with thehypothesis that the emission depends on dynamo action in the convectiveenvelope, the dynamo efficiency decreasing with decreasing rotationrate. The evolution of the emission is discussed as a function ofstellar mass. It is shown that stars which leave the main sequence withrelatively low or high rotational velocities show relatively low or highemission values, respectively. The flux lasts up to higher (B-V) valuesfor progressively higher masses.
|Revised MK spectral types for G, K, and M stars|
A catalog of spectral types of 552 G, K, and M stars is presented, whichis classified on the revised MK system. Stellar representatives of thehalo, disk, and arm populations in all parts of the sky are included.Photoelectric V magnitudes are given, as are intensity estimates of anyfeatures which make the spectrum appear peculiar as compared to thespectrum of a similar normal star. Abundance indices are also providedin the following lines or bands: CN, barium, Fe, calcium, and CH.
|Catalogue of stars with CaII H and K emissions|
|A catalogue of /Fe/H/ determinations|
A catalog of iron/hydrogen abundance ratios for 628 stars is compiledbased on 1109 published values. The catalog consists of (1) a table ofabsolute iron abundance determinations in the solar photosphere ascompiled by Blackwell (1974); (2) the iron/hydrogen abundances of 628stars in the form of logarithmic differences between iron abundances inthe given star and a standard star, obtained from analyses ofhigh-dispersion spectra as well as useful stellar spectroscopic andphotometric parameters; and (3) indications of the mean dispersion andwavelength interval used in the analyses. In addition, statistics on thedistributions of the number of determinations per star and the apparentmagnitudes and spectral types of the stars are presented.
